Fake Cinnamon

As a history lover, I have read about countries fighting each other, invading lands, and developing friendships just for a certain spice. Nope, not gold, not diamond but a spice which we all know as the mighty cinnamon. We are not the only people who were mesmerized by that irresistible relaxing aroma and mildly sweet and delicate flavor because Greeks to Romans all considered cinnamon as a gift from gods where archeologists found Cinnamon in ancient Egypt pyramids. I would take days to describe the history of cinnamon, so we have done our best in []. Though it seems surprising once I smelled my cinnamon scent I lost all doubts.

Keep all the flavors aside, thousands of research and experiments proved that cinnamon is some sort of a magic potion that cures diabetes, heart diseases, cancers while increasing metabolism. That’s why Sri Lankans who use cinnamon in every meal are considered to be one of the healthiest nations globally. Therefore I went straight to the market, bought fresh cinnamon, and started adding it to all the dishes. However to my surprise, neither the taste nor the texture matched with the descriptions about the cinnamon. Being a bit of a detective I wanted to dig deep rather than saying, “verbose bloggers”.  The findings shocked me to death, as  I found out all of our life we are fooled. Despite the real cinnamon, we are using a fake variety which is used as a rat poison. While globally peoples are infecting and governments are imposing laws against fake cinnamon, the marketplaces are filled with the fake version standing above the true one. Then you may ask what is this fake cinnamon?

What is this fake cinnamon?

Fake cinnamon is ‘Cinnamomum cassia’, called Chinese cinnamon or Cassia which deceives all the cinnamon lovers meanwhile dragging us to the liver and kidney damages through a high proportion of coumarin. Coumarin is considered to be a highly toxic compound that may damage the liver and kidney, causing cancers while dysfunctioning the nerve system. You may hear Saigon, Korintje, Indonesia cinnamon, Vietnamese Cinnamon, and cassia, these are varieties of poisonous Chinese cinnamon that will take you to death step by step. The horror is that the majority of the cinnamon market is represented by this fake version or versions.

In our lifetime we have seen copying, duplicating, and deluding but this is a far more critical stage. We are being deceived into a false toxic compound where it has triumphed the true cinnamon. Seeing the huge demand for cinnamon and a lower amount of supply,  vendors in China, Vietnam, and Indonesia have filled the market with their own variety. The worst part is users have immensely misguided where they identify the smell, flavor, and rough texture of the Cassia as the way actual cinnamon should be.

The real problem

Lora White is a friendly nanny who was chilled with abundant cinnamon rolls, tea, and cokes as well as the health benefits of cinnamon that are read at popular health blogs. Therefore she bought a cheap cinnamon pack from a nearby supermarket and started using that in every meal thinking she has won the battle against her diabetes. But little did she know, a week later her daughter Jenifer found Lora lying down in the kitchen fainted. Quickly she was admitted to the hospital out of nowhere she was recognized with serious liver damage. Do you know the root cause? It was our lovely CINNAMON. And this is the real problem with the fake cinnamon.

Fake cinnamon or any variety of cassia is contained with coumarin, a highly toxic chemical that is used as a rat poison. The special flavor and the scent of cassia or in other words fake cinnamon has resulted from the coumarin. That gives you a general measure of how much of a coumarin contained in cassia, and to be exact one teaspoon of fake cinnamon would contain about 12-18mg of coumarin where an average man could tolerate only 6mg on a daily basis with minimum side- effects. Possibly a cinnamon lover goes way beyond one tablespoon and the impact is highly catastrophic. The following table illustrates the effect by age category.

  • Age 1-5
  • Age 5-14
  • Age 14-40
  • Age 40-60
  • Age 60+

Average cinnamon usage             0.1 pounds

Absorbed Coumarin for cassia     45mg

Safe Zone of Coumarin                   1mg

Side Effects

Extremely critical. Could destroy cognitive development and the nerve system while making irreversible damage to the kidney and liver. Even death is possible

Average cinnamon usage             0.4 pounds

Absorbed Coumarin for cassia     180mg

Safe Zone of Coumarin                   2mg

Side Effects

Very dangerous. As in this time period, the necessary organs are developed; the extraordinary coumarin amount can lead to cancer in organs.

Average cinnamon usage             0.8 pounds

Absorbed Coumarin for cassia     360mg

Safe Zone of Coumarin                   5mg

Side Effects

Critical, even though this age group is quite tolerable with toxic compounds, continuous usage of cassia  can result in kidney and liver damages.

Average cinnamon usage             0.8 pounds

Absorbed Coumarin for cassia     360mg

Safe Zone of Coumarin                   4mg

Side Effects

Very dangerous, As this age group is considered to be quite deteriorating in health they could be fragile to the toxic effects of coumarin increasing possibly to organ failures.

Average cinnamon usage             0.6 pounds

Absorbed Coumarin for cassia     270mg

Safe Zone of Coumarin                   3mg

Side Effects

Extremely critical. Same as infants this age group is vulnerable to toxic compounds. So even death is possible

If this is not enough German Federal Institute of Risk Assessment and European Union Health care allies had issued alarms and restrictions against the importing and using cassia cinnamon as they could observe the health damage caused by cassia cinnamon.

Should we stop using cinnamon?

Reading the above passages makes you think ‘Sathan’ seems better as at least he doesn’t cause a slow painful death. So should we really stop cinnamon? What is the solution?

The answer is No, not stop but enhance the usage. Are you being sarcastic? You may ask.  You should DEFINITELY stop using fake cinnamon, the market cinnamon, or cassia. But start using the true cinnamon, not because it doesn’t contain poisonous COUMARIN, but it is sort of the elixir (a magical or medicinal potion) from heaven. You’ll realise it if you go through our article ********Cinnamon benefits**************** . The true cinnamon is none other but ‘Ceylon Cinnamon’ which only comes from Sri Lanka , a tiny island located in the middle of indian ocean. The scientific name is ‘Cinnamomum verum’ while the botanical name is  ‘Cinnamomum zeylanicum’. All the wars and treasure hunts we heard of happened for this ceylon cinnamon not for cassia. Arabians have believed that Sri Lanka should be located near to heaven to be gifted with this amazing plant. Keep aside the health benefits, the flavor and the scent of ceylon cinnamon is extravaganza. The ceylon cinnamon is spicy and enticing, comforting and sweet while the aroma is distinct and relaxing. Feels there aren’t  enough words created to describe that experience, so my advice is try it. Because Ceylon cinnamon is truly divine.

Feels cheated doesn’t it? The cassia has used the glory and the attraction of ceylon cinnamon for its own benefit. Being a small and unknown country Sri Lanka is unable to supply it’s demand and also fight with cassia selling countries. Other than that ceylon cinnamon herbal maturity is developed as they are handcrafted not like the cassia varieties. If you look into the following image of cassia and ceylon cinnamon, contrast to the one thick layer of cassia, ceylon cinnamon stick consists of several thin layers which have to be hand made due to the subtle nature. Thus, creating ceylon cinnamon is time consuming and expensive. Due to these factors greedy importers gave priority to the poisonous but cheap cassia which stood in your rack.

Help each other

The reason for this crisis is the unawareness of the public. People aren’t even aware that there exist multiple varieties of cinnamon and the danger of coumarin. The best way to solve this problem is to care for each other and share the knowledge(the share button is near you). With enhanced public attention, importers won’t have any other option rather than to sing the song of the unsung hero ‘Ceylon Cinnamon. So what is the best place to buy Ceylon cinnamon if you can’t even trust supermarkets? The answer is in the shop button.
